چکیده
Hypothesis / aims of study The measurement of residual urine is an essential part of the management of many urogynaecological patients such as patients with voiding difficulties before or after surgical intervention, patients with neurogenic bladders or dysfunctional voiding. Bladder residual volume has been historically measured by urethral or suprapubic catheterisation and is still considered as the gold standard. However, this method can be uncomfortable and create complications. Alternative non-invasive methods of calculating bladder volumes are therefore desirable and real-time ultrasound is quick, repeatable and accurate for this purpose. Bladderscan however, has an advantage on real-time ultrasound scan that it does not require specialist training, it is simple and easy to use and cost effective as well. It is extremely portable and therefore readily available for use in a busy out -patient setting. This study was therefore carried out to compare Bladderscan, real-time ultrasound scan and suprapubic catheterisation in the measurement of female residual bladder volume.

Is Foley Catheter Able to Drain the Bladder Completely in the Morning for Patients in ICU?
Introduction: Foley catheters are assumed to drain the bladder completely. It is known that uncompleted drainage leads to multiple complications, such as asymptomatic bacteriuria and urinary tract infection. Methods: From 116 patients, who were admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) for more than 24 hours, were enrolled in this study. To measure the urine level in bladder in the morning before a...

Objective: to compare the estimated thyroid volume, as determined by two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography, with real volume. Design: Descriptive Study Animals: A total of 7 mixed breed dogs Procedures: On 2D ultrasound, the thyroid volume is estimated by the ellipsoid equation and on 3D ultrasound; it is estimated by outlining the boundaries of the thyroid lobe in ...
متن کاملFirst Irish and tenth case of small bowel obstruction secondary to suprapubic catheterisation in the world. Case report and case review of a rare complication of suprapubic catheterisation
INTRODUCTION Percutaneous Suprapubic urinary bladder catheterisation (SPC) is a common procedure performed in cases of urinary retention where attempt to pass urethral catheter has failed. However, the procedure requires meticulous precision, vigilance and sound knowledge of anatomy, to avoid grave complications. We are reporting a very rare complication of Suprapubic catheterisation that is sm...
متن کاملThe accuracy of three-dimensional bladder ultrasonography in determining the residual urinary volume compared with conventional catheterisation
OBJECTIVE To determine the accuracy of three-dimensional bladder ultrasonography (US, using the BVI 3000, Verathon, WA, USA) for determining the residual urinary volume, compared with the conventional catheterisation method. PATIENTS AND METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study at day-care unit of a University hospital after obtaining approval from the Ethics Review Committee of the hospi...
متن کاملThe risk of intra-urethral Foley catheter balloon inflation in spinal cord-injured patients: Lessons learned from a retrospective case series.
BACKGROUND Inflating the balloon of Foley catheter in urethra is a complication of urethral catheterisation. We report five patients in whom this complication occurred because of unskilled catheterisation. Due to lack of awareness, the problem was not recognised promptly and patients came to harm. CASE SERIES A tetraplegic patient developed pain in lower abdomen and became unwell after transu...
